AVID

Elmhurst is the only AVID Elementary school in the Ventura Unified School District.

AVID Elementary classes focus on the lens of WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading) to enhance the designated curriculum, frameworks, and common core expectations per grade level.  AVID Elementary is a metacognitive methodology that promotes best teaching practices to develop consistency in thinking, processing and delivering information by both student and teachers.

Gardening

Elmhurst has received multiple gardening grants, including the Whole Foods Grant and offers gardening opportunities to all students.  Seedlings are grown in some classes and then planted in gardening boxes and/or barrels. Other seeds are grown directly from the soil. Students participate in planting, watering, weeding, and harvesting. Fruits and vegetables grown on site are then eaten. Some examples that we’ve tried are corn, lettuce, tomatoes, pumpkins, peppers, beans, squash, strawberries, carrots, etc
